When Adobe started putting AI into InDesign, most of the attention went to the shiny image toys: Generative Expand, Text to Image, and the like. But that is just the beginning. The real time-savers are hidden in the text, the layout, and the mechanics of production. Here are seven ways InDesign’s AI works on the stuff that actually matters.
1. Auto Style for Instant, Consistent Text Formatting
Styling long documents is a tedious, repetitive task. Auto Style, powered by Adobe Sensei, reads your text using artificial intelligence to identify elements such as headings, subheadings, paragraphs, and bullet points . It then applies styles to different sections based on a selected Style Pack.
A Style Pack is essentially a group of paragraph styles that can be applied to a group of text frames simultaneously . You can create a “Sans Serif” pack and a “Serif” pack, for example, and toggle between them with a single click. This is perfect for creating multiple design concepts or adapting a layout for different brand guidelines . The feature works on selected text, single frames, or multiple frames and is available in English (International), English (North America), and German locales .
2. AI Assistant: The “How Do I…?” Chat
The AI Assistant in InDesign (Beta) is designed to eliminate the need to dig through tutorials . It understands your document and design intent in real time. Instead of searching, you simply ask a question.

The Assistant provides contextual help, including how to perform tasks and learn about tools and shortcuts . 3. Generative Alt-Text for Accessibility
Accessibility is a growing requirement, and writing alt-text for every image is a bottleneck. InDesign can now use generative AI to automatically create alternative descriptions of images .
The feature is part of Adobe’s Generative AI ecosystem and is accessed through generative credits included in your subscription . When you place an image without alt-text, the AI generates a description and adds a small indicator to the frame .
However, caution is needed. Research by Fondazione LIA found that the current quality is inconsistent. In one test, an iguana was incorrectly identified as a lizard. In another, a chart’s alt-text reproduced the title but failed to describe the actual data . The feature is also active by default, meaning it will automatically generate descriptions and consume your generative credits even when not needed . For now, treat AI-generated alt-text as a starting point—a draft that must be human-reviewed and corrected for accuracy and context .
4. Generative Expand for Layout Fixes
Generative Expand lets you extend an image beyond its original borders without leaving InDesign . It uses AI to create new pixels that blend with the original image.
This is perfect when you drop a landscape image onto a cover and realize you need a taller format, or when a client suddenly wants a banner version of a hero image and you don’t have time for a full retouch . Generative Expand will create three different variations to choose from . The original image is replaced by the generated version, so you may want to save a copy first . You can also use a text prompt to guide the expansion by describing the elements you want in the new area .
5. InDesign MCP Server: AI-Driven Document Automation
This is for the power users. The InDesign MCP Server is a system that enables AI assistants like Claude to directly control Adobe InDesign through natural language commands .
It works by providing an interface for an AI to do everything from creating documents and managing pages to editing text, generating styles, and placing images . This is not a simple in-app feature. It is a developer tool designed for building custom automation workflows.
You can use it to: Automate the generation of newsletters, brochures, or reports from data; batch-process multiple documents with consistent styling; create dynamic catalogues from databases; and automate template-based document creation . The server includes over 135 professional tools covering document management, text, graphics, styles, tables, and export, and runs on macOS with Node.js 18+ .
6. AI for Text Editing and Placeholder Content
The AI Assistant can also directly edit text and typography . You can give simple commands like:
- Convert the selected text into bullet points.
- Add placeholder text to the selected text frame.
- Apply RGB (0, 128, 128) to selected objects.
This is a quick way to handle micro-edits without navigating through menus .
7. Data Merge and Programmatic Layout
This is part of the advanced automation workflow. The InDesign MCP Server and other AI-driven tools support data merge operations . You can combine a template with a CSV file to generate hundreds of personalized documents—such as mailing labels, certificates, or customized brochures—automatically .
